Internet Kiosks

FireStar Kiosks use the Windows XP platform alongside our very own "Guardian" software. The end result is a relatively open system with minimised restrictions. Every Kiosk starts its service life with a brand new fresh installation of all software and that's how it remains after every log off, shut down or restart. A completely refreshed, clean, rebuild every time. This is our Guarantee.

FireStar kiosks have no anti-virus or spyware protection installed!!
So we advise all customers to stay away from the nasty sites, downloads and doubtful attachments in their emails if security is a concern. Otherwise nasties are never a problem to anyone except the current user. 

PIN Cards may be purchased from the reception or office area.

The above is a guide only as pricing may change or vary from site to site.

NB: All time is deducted in blocks of 5 minutes.
PINs with less than 5 minutes remaining become invalid.

How to Log in & Out

Instructions for using FireStar Internet Paystations

  1. Check if the computer or monitor is alive by moving the mouse. (Computer or monitor may need starting)
  2. After waiting or starting the computer the "LOGIN" screen should appear.
  3. Enter a 12 character alphanumeric PIN and click Enter/Login
  4. Programs may be viewed on windows XP Desktop or,
  5. Left Click the START button in the bottom left hand corner for further MENU
  6. Double click the Time2_thumbnail icon (on desktop) to see time remaining.
  7. Double click the Extend2_thumbnail icon (on desktop) to extend time (within last 5 minutes).
  8. Double click the Logout_fs2_thumbnail icon (on desktop) or right click the Logout_fs2_thumbnail icon (on taskbar) to log off.

How to Print

NB: Five minutes of time will be deducted per page.

  1. Kiosk printing default is an image writer, "CutePDF"
  2. Always "Print Preview" before printing. Some pages from the internet cannot be printed and will need to be pasted into Word, Notepad or Open Office before printing.
  3. Select "FireStar Printer" for printing.
Please be advised: Make sure there is enough time remaining to print all pages required. Printing more pages than time remaining will result in instant shut down of Kiosk.

How to Email

  1. Purchase a FireStar PIN card and login.
  2. Open a web browser and log into any email account or create an account at one of the various free web based email providers. FireStar suggest using Gmail, Hotmail or yahoo etc...
  3. Emailing is possible from any selected provider. Logging out & restart of the FireStar Guardian kiosks completely removes all history/cookies, temporary internet files and confidential information. A completely refreshed, clean, rebuild every time. This is our Guarantee.

How to use CD/Dvd Copying and Flash Drives

NB: Please ensure there is sufficient time remaining as once "Timed Out" or "Logged Out" of the session all work will be permanently deleted on the FireStar Kiosk.

  1. Purchase a FireStar Pin card and Login
  2. Starting with windows desktop choose one of the following:
     - Insert the memory card into the correct slot in the memory card reader
     - or place portable flash drive into a USB port
     - or connect digital cameras to a USB port
    then wait about 30 seconds
  3. Open the "My Computer" icon.
  4. Find and open the removable disk drive file.
  5. Go to windows desktop and click on the "How to burn a CD/DVD" icon for full video instructions on transferring files to the CD/DVD burner.
  6. To view finishing files/photos, double click the "My Computer" icon and then the "CD/DVD" file icon after burning or copying process has been completed

How to Use Skype

NB: Check with reception for headphone hire options.

Instructions:

  1. Purchase a FireStar PIN Card and Login
  2. Please ensure that the Headphones or Webcam is correctly plugged into the computer.
  3. Double click on the Skype shortcut icon on the desktop.
  4. Sign into an existing Skype account by clicking "Cancel" and entering User name and Password or create a new Account by following the Skype instructions
  5. Follow Skype instructions on how to use.

How to Use Open Office

OpenOffice.org or OpenOffice is a free open source software that can be used as a substitute for Office programs such as Microsoft Ofiice. It supports the ISO/IEC standard OpenDocument Format (ODF) for data interchange as its default file format, as well as Microsoft Office formats among others. OpenOffice also Supports over 110 Languages. FireStar Kiosks are all loaded with the lastest version of OpenOffice and is compatible with almost all other Office programs available today.

Instructions:

  1. Purchase a FireStar PIN card and login.
  2. On the desktop double click on the icon "OpenOffice 3.1"
  3. The open Office start up window will appear.
  4. Choose a program type from the list eg Text Document (Similar to Word), Spreadsheet (Similar to Excel), Presentation (Similar to PowerPoint)
  5. Click on the desired program and wait for it to load
